MedX is specialized equipment we utilize to both test and train the spinal extensor muscles.
Developed by Arthur Jones, who brought us Nautilus equipment, it has been shown through many studies to be an effective tool in both cervical and lumbar spine rehabilitation. It is unique for several reasons. One is its ability to provide objective strength data and to isolate lumbar and cervical motion (on the respective machines) for validity of testing and training.
What we do
Renaissance is a specialty clinic when it comes to treating back and neck pain. Our main focus is therapeutic exercise, with an emphasis on active participation by the patient in his or her own recovery. The MedX lumbar and cervical extension machines are at the core of our program, enabling us to completely isolate the spinal muscles, thus providing us with an accurate method to evaluate, analyze and treat low back and neck pain.
What is MedX?
MedX refers to the company name, and the computerized exercise equipment
owned and designed by Arthur Jones, former owner/inventor of Nautilus
equipment. MedX equipment was designed to evaluate and strengthen
specific muscles associated with the function of the cervical and
lumbar spine.

How the Program works:
Cardiovascular Warm-up
The warm-up period is very important.
Warming up allows the heart to increase its rate gradually, and
to dilate the size of the blood vessels to accommodate the increased
blood flow during exercise. Beginning an activity suddenly (without
a warm-up) can injure muscles, ligaments and tendons. The increased
body temperature after a warm-up makes the muscles more flexible
and better prepared for the exercise session.
Stretching
Following the warm-up, a series of stretching and ROM exercises
are performed. Stretching the muscles will increase the range of
motion of the joints, promote circulation and reduce muscle tension.
MedX Machines
We utilize two MedX machines. One is designed for lumbar extension,
the other, cervical extension. The MedX machines allow for complete
isolation of the spinal muscles, providing accurate measurements
of ROM, strength, and work capacity of these muscles.
Circuit
The circuit is a series of progressive resistive exercises for the entire
body. This is a necessary component for strengthening the key muscle
groups, which promote good posture and muscular balance.
The Facts:
- Physical reconditioning
of the spine has become the cornerstone of successful low back
treatment programs.
- Treatment of back
and neck pain requires prompt diagnosis, early care, continuing
physician participation, and careful monitoring and re-evaluation
by a physical therapist.
- Our center provides
comprehensive and individualized programs, varying in length from
a few days to several weeks.
